Double Space Your Text Quickly and Easily!

I love double spacing text when I give my kids short stories to read towards the end of the year!  The extra space in between the lines makes it a lot easier for them to track the text from left to right!

This nifty keyboard shortcut will help make the task of double spacing your text in Microsoft Word a lot easier!

What Did They Say!?
<div align="center"><a href="http://aturntolearn.blogspot.com/2012/12/whatdidtheysay12-26.html" title="What Did They Say!?"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OIhmtxluCS0/ULwEfazkl1I/AAAAAAAADpM/MMMzxm23B0Y/s320/What+Did+They+Say+Wednesday.png" alt="What Did They Say!?" style="border:none;" /></a></div>

This week's story comes from a little kid that can't make the "l" sound... so half of these w's are actually l's.

Student: "My dad is awways being mean to me"
Me: "Why?"
Student: "He's awways cawwing (always calling) me a swowpoke (slowpoke)"
Me: "Well, do you walk slow sometimes?"
Student: "Yes! But I have wittle wegs! (little legs!)"
I wish I had an audio recording so you could hear how cute she was when she said it!

Now... it's time to share your cute kids story from this week!

Rules for the Linky Party:
  1. Share a story that one of your kids said on your blog!  If you don't have a blog, leave a comment with your story!

Gingerbread Handwriting Book! (4th Day of Giveaways!)

Just because it's December doesn't mean that our handwriting is perfect yet (even though I wish it was!)  Use this cute little gingerbread book to help reinforce proper letter formation!

The numbered lines will help students write the letters properly, and the gingerbread theme is sure to catch their eye!

The past few days, I had you guess my favorite Christmas story, movie, and song.  This time... guess where I'm going to be tomorrow to celebrate Christmas day!  My house, my parents house, or my in-laws house?  This time, everyone who guesses correctly will win, not just the first two people!

Update:
Thanks to everyone for guessing!  This year we actually hosted Christmas at our house!  It was the first time we did it and I just loved hosting!!!  Congratulations Heather, Steph, and Pat!  Steph and Pat, please leave me a comment with your email address so I can send you the writing book!

Help Your Kids With Those Tricky Teen Numbers 11-20!

Aren't those tricky teen numbers the worst!?  My kids always struggle with them, but these poems and visuals definitely make a difference!

Now, for the 2nd of my 5 days of giveaways, I thought I'd give away of both of those products, but... there's a catch!  You have to guess my favorite Christmas movie (and leave your email address of course!).  I'll give you one hint: it's a cartoon!

The first two people to guess correctly will win both sets of number writing poems!

Update 12/23...
My favorite Christmas movie is Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer!

Here's another little nifty keyboard shortcut to make your technology experience a little easier!

This is another tip that seems to work primarily in Microsoft Word, but I really do wish it worked in other programs!

What Did They Say? Wednesday! (Linky Party!)

Don't kids say the most hysterical things!  I have been loving all of the link ups the past few weeks, and I'm looking forward to hearing your funny kid story this week!

What Did They Say!?
<div align="center"><a href="http://aturntolearn.blogspot.com/2012/12/whatdidtheysay12-19.html" title="What Did They Say!?"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OIhmtxluCS0/ULwEfazkl1I/AAAAAAAADpM/MMMzxm23B0Y/s320/What+Did+They+Say+Wednesday.png" alt="What Did They Say!?" style="border:none;" /></a></div>

I've been sick this week, so I thought I'd post about a story that happened last time I was sick.

Just before Hurricane Sandy, I had bronchitis and I missed a day of school.  Once we got word that school was closed, I made phone calls to parents about the closing. When I called one of my moms she said excitedly, "I'm so glad you called! My son has been so worried about you for days because he knows you've been sick and he was scared you wouldn't be able to get to the doctor in the storm! I don't know what you did to him but it's all he's been talking about this whole weekend!"

These kids are just too precious!

Now... it's time to share your cute kids story from this week!

How to Make Any Picture a Coloring Page!

It's time for another technology tutorial... and this one is super fun (and could make a great gift for the holidays!  This week we'll learn how to make any picture into a coloring page!

Here's the poll for this week... this one won by a landslide!

The picture that I used for this tutorial is one of my husband when he was 3.  How cute is he!?

This tutorial definitely works best with a picture that has good lighting.  I tried it with another picture that had a dark background and it didn't look as nice... so try it with lots of different pictures!

You can download this tutorial as a PDF by clicking this picture!
Note: This tutorial is hosted on Google Docs.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your computer!

The next poll will be up for two weeks... since next Tuesday is Christmas Day, I won't be posting a new tutorial, but you can definitely expect one the following Tuesday (even though it's New Year's Day!)

Next week, I'll add how to make a text box transparent or semi-transparent (in Word or PowerPoint).

Underline Words But Not Spaces!

This one I actually learned recently and I think it is the coolest!  I used to do this manually and this little shortcut would have saved me tons of time!

This tip seems to only work in Microsoft Word, but I wish this tip worked in PowerPoint!

What Did They Say? Wednesday! (Linky Party!)

Don't kids say the most hysterical things!  I thought it would be fun to make a weekly linky party to share some of our funniest stories!

What Did They Say!?
<div align="center"><a href="http://aturntolearn.blogspot.com/2012/12/whatdidtheysay12-12.html" title="What Did They Say!?"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OIhmtxluCS0/ULwEfazkl1I/AAAAAAAADpM/MMMzxm23B0Y/s320/What+Did+They+Say+Wednesday.png" alt="What Did They Say!?" style="border:none;" /></a></div>

I have a fun holiday story to share this week...

One of my girls comes up to me and says in her most excited voice, "Did you know that Santa Claus is coming to town just to see me and take a picture with me!?"

So adorable!

Now... it's time to share your cute kids story from this week!

Rules for the Linky Party:
  1. Share a story that one of your kids said on your blog!  If you don't have a blog, leave a comment with your story!

How to Make an Outline of Any Font!

It's Tuesday again... which means it's time for another technology tutorial!  The winner for this week was how to make an outline of any text!

This option won the poll its first week!

So you know, the tutorial has three parts:
  1. Outline of Any Font in Microsoft Word (Mac or PC)
  2. Outline of Any Font in Microsoft PowerPoint (PC)
  3. Outline of Any Font in Microsoft PowerPoint (Mac)
I hope that makes it a little easier for you to find the option that works best for you!

You can download this tutorial as a PDF by clicking this picture!
Note: This tutorial is hosted on Google Docs.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your computer!

For next week's poll, I'm going to add how to make any picture into a coloring image.  I really hope this comes up before the holidays!  I think it would be so cute to make a coloring book with pictures of the students and give each student a copy as part of their holiday gift!

This definitely works better with pictures of people rather than little furry dogs... but that's just an example!

What Did They Say? Wednesday! (Linky Party!)

Reason #5,765,432,765 why I love teaching: kids say the funniest and cutest things!  I thought it would be so much fun to read all of the things that kids all over the world are saying... so I decided to start a weekly linky party "What Did They Say? Wednesday!"

What Did They Say!?
<div align="center"><a href="http://aturntolearn.blogspot.com/2012/12/what-did-they-say-wednesday-linky-party.html" title="What Did They Say!?"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OIhmtxluCS0/ULwEfazkl1I/AAAAAAAADpM/MMMzxm23B0Y/s320/What+Did+They+Say+Wednesday.png" alt="What Did They Say!?" style="border:none;" /></a></div>

Here is my "What Did They Say?" story for this week:

In my class this week, one of my little Kindergarten students says in his most serious voice, "Ms. Jessica, there's a problem with one the books I'm taking home today."  I'm fully expecting for one of the books to have a tear in it, yet he pulls a brand new book out of his bag... a book about bats.

I couldn't find a picture of the real book online, but the cover had a picture of a bat on it, like this:

He then says to me, while pointing to the words, "The words of my book go this way,"  Then, he flips the book upside down and says, "But the bat goes this way.  The picture is upside down!"  He was pretty convinced that he found a publishing error!  I obviously explained to him that bats like to hang upside down... but it was hard to convince him that the book was printed correctly!

Now... it's time to share your cute kids story from this week!

Rules for the Linky Party:
  1. Share a story that one of your kids said on your blog!  If you don't have a blog, leave a comment with your story!
  2. Use the HTML code at the top of this post to link back to the post!
  3. Comment on the two blog posts before yours!

This linky party will be posted through 11:59pm on Tuesday.  On Wednesday, a new linky will be started.  I decided to host this as a weekly collection so that we can share numerous stories from our students!

How to Embed a Video in Smart Notebook!

It's Tuesday again, and I am shockingly writing this post before the stroke of midnight! :)  The winner of this week's poll was how to embed a video in Smart Notebook!

Here's the poll for anyone interested!

Now, onto the tutorial!  If your video is not .flv, check out yesterday's tutorial to learn how to convert it!

Don't you just love when they're short and sweet?

You can download this tutorial as a PDF by clicking this picture!
Note: This tutorial is hosted on Google Docs.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your computer!

I do plan on adding some other Smart Notebook Tutorials in the future, but in the meantime I want to add a Microsoft Word/PowerPoint option... how to make any font into an outline!

How to Convert a Video to Another File Type!

I know, I know... it's not Tuesday yet I'm doing a technology tutorial!  And I know... at a glance, this tutorial doesn't seem very "teachery..." but I promise you it is!  Converting videos to another file type is perfect for adding that YouTube video to your class iPad / iTouch (even if there's no internet!) and sometimes we need to do this to help us embed videos in Smart Notebook.  Since it looks like embedding videos will win the technology poll this week, I think this is the perfect time to add it!

You can download this tutorial as a PDF by clicking this picture!
Note: This tutorial is hosted on Google Docs.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your computer!
If you want... start converting any videos to FLV files so that you can embed them into Smart Notebook for tomorrow's tutorial! :)
